Discipleship in the Dirt

At the age of 61, engineer Darryl Byle felt God calling him to leave his corporate work in Montana and start an incredibly unexpected adventure. For over 20+ years Darryl ran his own businesses, working two to three different jobs at the same time. He was faithful with his time and resources, and increased his skills; he had no idea that his work was preparing him for a project that will serve others for decades.

Then one day, he felt God convicting him to let go of the things of this world and to follow Him to Africa.

After much conviction, Darryl got on a plane and headed to Liberia with no intention or plan other than to see what the Lord was already doing. After spending time with LIVE2540’s mission partners in Bong County, Liberia, and hearing about the plan to build a clinic for some of the most vulnerable children in the world, he committed to becoming the lead engineer of the new 10,000-square-foot hospital build - The Jesus Loves Me Children’s Clinc.

Darryl spent most of this year on-site in Liberia leading a group of 50+ men. He’s not only teaching them new ways to build but he’s growing a relationship with each of them through morning devotionals and discipleship.

Darryl and the team are constructing a building that is meant to withstand the difficult Liberian climate and conditions for decades. The ribbon will be cut on the building this year, serving 30,000 children. In his time working with this crew, Darryl has seen many snakes, medical miracles, soccer games (Darryl serves as a ref for the Liberian teams in Bong County), countless hand-constructed bricks and the power of discipleship through friendship.
