31 Days of Devotion, Day 20 by Cindy Smith

Daily Reading: Mark 1:16-20

With my eyes closed I reach over to shut off the phone alarm. Another day to get up, get dressed, take care of all my responsibilities. Then, in the evening, I fall into bed after setting the alarm to do everything all over again.

What gives life purpose? What makes me fall in bed at night with a sense of satisfaction and a desire to get up and face another day?  What takes the mundane out of each day?
Simon, Andrew, James, and John had shown up for work. They were repeating what they had done the day before and the day before that. Mending nets and casting them into the sea. Perhaps their days had become mundane. If so, everything was about to change when they said “yes” to a personal three-word invitation, “Come, follow me.”

Jesus used their occupation as a teaching point to show them the importance of reaching people with the love of God. Jesus does the same for you and I, right where we are. Our lives may look different, but our God given purpose is the same, “Follow Me”. Everything we do offers a possibility of sharing the love of God and pointing others to Him. This keeps the mundane out and gives us a smile on our face each night as we set our alarms for the next day. Following Jesus is a true adventure.
Living with the call to follow Christ, sharing His love, is different every day. Following Jesus is to love Him and love them.

Daily Prayer

Lord, fill my mind and heart with the things that matter to you. Save me from a concern about myself that stands in the way of my inviting others into your presence. Amen.
