31 Days of Devotion, Day 8 by Cathy Holbert

Daily Reading: Isaiah 58:1-14

As I took time to read these passages, I was struck by two ways in which we can get a re-set with God.  How many of us need that?  Life can get so busy that there needs to be time when we push aside from our usual activities and just spend time with the Lord.  One way is by taking a “Sabbath” rest each week to step aside from our regular schedule and just spend time with God and gain new perspective on the upcoming week.  Another way mentioned is the area of fasting.  Fasting is a means of setting aside time and being intentional about leaving some things off in our lives, whether it be food or some type of activity, so that we can quiet ourselves before God.  It is during those times that we can hear from God and repent for things that might come up as a result of time spent in Bible study, prayer, and reflection.  “Sabbath” rest and fasting is a time to look inward.

As we step out of these times of reset, we should be in a better place both spiritually, mentally, and physically to look outwardly.  There are needs all around us.  How would God like us to reach out of our comfort zone and meet the needs of the most vulnerable?  Sometimes these needs can seem overwhelming, and that is where God comes in.  Ask Him where He has chosen for you to serve, and then serve with all of your heart.  As you reach out to others, God promises to meet your needs as well.

Daily Prayer
Lord, help me to order my life in ways that reflect the heart that you have for the world. May I not focus on my spiritual position, except that I may be in a posture to serve. You have called me to glorify you through my service to others. Free me from a preoccupation with myself that causes me to overlook those whom you would have me serve. Amen.
